One thing I quickly discovered about Manhattan, Kansas is that it is full of wonderful, locally owned businesses. One of the sweetest is 4 Cakes Bakery. Today I am honored to feature my interview with Rachel Benjamin, owner of 4 Cakes in Manhattan, Kansas!
Please take a moment to introduce yourself, your family and business.
My name is Rachel Benjamin. I own and run 4 Cakes Bakery in Manhattan, KS. I grew up on a pheasant farm in southeast Kansas. I came to Manhattan in 1990 to go to KSU, met my husband Scott and never left. We opened 4 Olives Restaurant and Wine Bar in 2004 after the birth of our son. We have four children from age 8 to 18.
What did you want to be when you “grow up”?
I am a scientist at heart, earned a degree in Chemistry and did graduate work in Protein Chemistry. As a kiddo, I always thought I would end up running a lab somewhere.
When did you launch your business?
I have always made cakes for friends and family, but decided to create a brand and become official in January of 2012. When our restaurant relocated in January of 2014, I was able to open my own storefront.
Looking back, what do you wish you would have known your 1st year in business?
As silly as it sounds, I let my business run me instead of me running my business. I have a better handle on things now.
What is the best advice you can offer a bride in regards to her cake/cupcakes/desserts?
To not worry about what everyone else wants, to choose a cake/cupcakes/desserts that is part of her and her fiancee’s vision, not that of 250 other people.
What are you most proud of about your business and the services you offer?
We make everything fresh daily from the best ingredients in small batches. We never freeze our products.
I would rather get up early then stay up late!
Anything else you’d like to share?
I do not have any formal training beyond some cake decorating and gumpaste flower classes. Everything I know I learned from my Mom and Grandmother, and most importantly is to bake with love!
